Hungarian town to turn to Brussels about "new iron curtain"
A Hungarian town near the Austrian border is considering turning to Brussels to solve the stand-off that has developed between it and those across the border, writes hirszerzo.hu. Since Hungary joined the Schengen zone in December, Austrian towns near the Hungarian border have been deliberately hindering free movement of traffic with signs and road blocks.
Fertőrákos Mayor János Palkovics invited leaders of nearby Austrian towns for negotiations last week. He said they had given themselves until spring to solve the "unacceptable border situation." If all efforts to make Austrians open the border and allow free movement of traffic fail, they will officially ask for help from Brussels.
To counter the Austrian towns' measures to limit free movement, the government of Fertőrákos placed German-language greeting signs on the border. Austrians, however, reportedly issue fines of up to €70 to motorists who use the roads connecting the two countries.
