László Cseh bested his own European record during qualifying for the 200-metre medley at the World Swimming Championships in Rome on Wednesday.

Cseh advanced to the finals by setting a European record of 1:55.18. He finished second behind American Ryan Lochte, but the race was so close that their finishing times are identical.

Gergő Kis, also of Hungary, also advanced to today's finals.

Katinka Hosszú set a new European record of 2:04.27 in the women's 200-metre butterfly to advance to this afternoon's final.
