Hungarian railway workers plan surprise strikes

A railway strike can start any day from Friday, February 1, and passengers will not be informed until they arrive at a station, said István Gaskó, leader of the Free Trade Union of Railway Workers (VDSZSZ) on television on Tuesday.

Gaskó said that in Western Europe, trade unions often do not specify either the length or the starting date of strikes. The VDSZSZ is attempting to prevent state railway company MÁV from preparing for the strike and re-grouping employees to allow trains to run despite the strike.

Gaskó does not think the demands for a 17% wage hike are unrealistic because employees now working for companies outsourced from MÁV no longer receive social and welfare contributions.
