Hungarian railway strike resumes for 9 hours
The Free Union of Railway Workers (VDSZSZ) restarted their strike last night at midnight and suspended the strike this morning at 9 a.m. for an unspecified time, leader István Gaskó told MTI. The railway strike was first suspended on February 7 but restarted last night due to an unsuccessful negotiation between the state railway company MÁV Zrt and the union on Sunday.
Gaskó said he believed that a Monday morning strike put sufficient pressure on the company. They hope MÁV will move from its previous standpoint at the second negotiation which is to be held at 3 p.m. this afternoon.
MÁV press chief Imre Kavalecz said the normal schedule will resume by this evening.
The union is still demanding Ft 250,000 (€950) for each worker from revenue generated when MÁV Cargo - formerly a freight unit of MÁV - was privatized. Further, the union requests an additional 10% monthly pay increase above the offered 6.9% for employees of outsourced MÁV companies MÁV-START Zrt, MÁV-Trakció Zrt and MÁV Gépészet Zrt.
