Hungarian president honours 90 year-old writer
President László Sólyom awarded the Order of Merit Grand Cross of the Republic of Hungary to writer Magda Szabó at the Sándor Palace on Thursday to mark her 90th birthday. Her books have been translated into 42 languages.
In Debrecen, the writer's home town, a bookstore at the Arany Bika (Golden Bull) hotel was named after Szabó on Wednesday, while the Debrecen Csokonai Theatre gave a dress rehearsal of her play "Cats' Wednesday," which is about the 18th-century poet Mihály Vitéz. The premier of the play will be held tonight.
