Hungarian President upgrades eight villages
President László Sólyom has granted the title of town to eight villages from July 1, namely Bodajk (Fejér county), Fertőszentmiklós (Győr-Moson-Sopron county), Hajós (Bács-Kiskun county), Halásztelek (Pest county), Isaszeg (Pest county), Pusztaszabolcs (Fejér county), Rudabánya (Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county) and Zamárdi (Somogy county).
This took the total number of towns to 306, writes index.hu, of a total of 3129 settlements. Some 67% of the population of the country currently lives in towns, according to minister of local governments István Gyenesei.
Creating a strong and successful Hungary is only possible by developing the structure of theses settlements, he added, pointing out that non-government organizations had played a significant role in transforming the villages into towns. Each of the new towns functions as the center of a small area, either culturally, economically or in terms of tourism, resulting in greater responsibility for the leaders and residents of these towns, he added.
This year, 23 settlements applied for a town status, and the minister, based on the suggestion by the panel of experts, forwarded eight of the applications to the president, who in turn approved all of them.
