Hungarian president speaks out against nuclear energy
Hungary should implement more efficient energy-saving schemes rather than utilise nuclear power to meet its growing energy needs, President László Sólyom said Thursday during a visit to a nuclear waste depot under construction at Bátaapáti.
Speaking on the third and final day of his tour of the provinces, Sólyom said no social debate has been held on this issue, but he hopes that this would be a top priority of the future ombudsman for the environment.
Fidesz MP Zoltán Illés, who was present, said no nuclear waste depot is needed at Bátaapáti as the disposal of small and medium-scale radioactive waste has been resolved at the Paks nuclear power plant. He recalled that a resolution recently passed by Parliament does not authorise the government to extend the life span of the nuclear plant.
