Hungarian Police: Fewer accidents due to stricter controls
Fewer accidents occurred this year than in the same period last year, reports vezess.hu. According to police, this improvement is due to stricter controls and modified regulations.
Comparing this January with the same period the previous year, the number of personal injury accidents has dropped by 19 percent, while the number of deadly accidents dropped by 39 percent, and the number of casualties by 37.8 percent. The number of serious injuries decreased by 27 percent while lighter injuries were down by 15 percent. Speeding continues to be the main cause of accidents, playing a part in 36 percent of them, while not obeying of right-of-way rules causes 21 percent, and taking turns irregularly is responsible for 12 percent of the accidents.
Since the introduction of zero tolerance for drunk driving at the beginning of this year, the accidents caused by drunk drivers has dropped from 216 to 110, which is nearly a 50 percent decrease. On the other hand, despite the strict new rules, there are still many drivers who take the risk and drink before getting into a car. During this period, 878 driving licenses have been seized by the police.
The changes in the number of accidents in the first month of the year are positive, but it is a strong tendency that in the first half of the year there are much less accidents than between June and October. Police are hopeful that this decrease in the number of accidents will continue.
