"Police detained 73 individuals involved in the disturbances on October 22 and 23," National Police chief József Bencze announced yesterday. "Police did not set a trap for demonstrators in Nagymező utca, in Budapest's Sixth District on Monday, but intervened when it became apparent that the demonstrators intended to cause trouble at the state celebrations in the nearby Opera," Bencze explained.

"The CCTV system in Budapest is now used to identify rioters, and an additional video surveillance system was installed for the holidays," Bencze said. "Police are continuing to identify last year's rioters," he added.

"The police have launched an investigation into György Budaházy on suspicion that he violated a court-imposed curfew. The police reported the findings to a judge who will decide whether to fine Budaházy, put him under house arrest or incarcerate him," Bencze explained.
