Hungarian police accepting donations for injured officers
A nationwide collection has begun for policemen injured during last week's riots in Budapest, with several million forints already donated to a non-governmental organization called the "For a Safe Hungary Foundation" (A Biztonságos Magyarországért Közalapítvány) according to Hungarian police superintendent László Bene.
Regulations require that donations to the police be made through the foundation.
László Garamvölgyi, spokesman for the National Police Headquarters, earlier revealed that that the riots caused Ft 639 million (approximately €2.3 million) worth of damages, including Ft 100 million of damage to police equipment. More than 100 officers were injured during the several nights of protests, several seriously.
