Olympic champion canoeist György Kolonics died this morning while training for the Beijing Olympics, reports sports site sportgeza.hu.
Considered one of the favorites for this summer's Olympics, Kolonics won medals in Atlanta in 1996 with Csaba Horváth and in a singles competition in Sydney in 2000.
Kolonics became ill during training, and lost consciousness shortly after the motorboat accompanying him reached him. Attempts to revive him were made upon bringing him to shore, but proved unsuccessful.
Kolonics was also a world champion fifteen times over.
