Non-profit organizations Hungarian Democratic Union (MDU) and Movement for More Humane Parking (EPM) have sent an open letter to the government asking it to abolish paid parking until the problems surrounding the system are solved, reports vezess.hu. In their opinion, the current system of paid parking is in urgent need of re-regulation. They asked the government to appoint an ombudsman and create a committee for the job.

"As long as the collected money is not going to the public coffers, the way of using the money is not reassuringly settled, and clean operations cannot be guaranteed, paid parking should be abolished!" the letter said.

The MDU and the EPM are currently working out ways for the system of paid parking to operate in a manner which is acceptable for society, with the help of traffic experts and other non-profit organizations. They are also proposing the establishment of a social organization which would control the system in order to prevent corruption cases such as those revealed recently.

The organizations believe one of the main problems is that parking fees are not spent on improving public transportation or the condition of roads, and the system is no longer fulfilling its original purpose which was to control traffic.
