Hungarian nationalists heckle "anti-fascist" commemoration
Protesters threw eggs at attendees of a memorial event organized by the Association of Hungarian Resistance and Anti-Fascists (Magyar Ellenállók és Antifasiszták Szövetsége; MEASZ) held at the controversial Soviet military monument on Budapest's Szabadság on Tuesday, reports mti.hu. Police have arrested three people.
Around 15 to 20 protesters - familiar to police from the riots of recent weeks - disturbed the event with continuous shouting and cursing. The attendees, mostly elderly people, were surrounded by a double cordon. One protester started throwing eggs at the elderly at the beginning of the event, hitting one person in the face. Riot police officers handcuffed the protester and later two others as well.
Hungarian nationalists believe that the Communist era monument commemorating the liberation of Hungary from the Nazis during the Second World War should be removed.
