Hungarian ministry would limit night flying
A draft proposal at the Hungarian Economy and Transportation Ministry (GKM) would introduce stricter regulation on the night flights at Budapest's Ferihegy Airport, writes inforadio.hu.
The plan is to reduce night aircraft movement by limiting the number of flights between ten pm and six am to 40, and only allowing four between midnight and five am. This way the number of night flights would decrease by 17, but these 17 flights could not be handled during the day.
According to the airport, airline companies and tourism experts, this change would seriously damage the Hungarian economy by deteriorating the competitiveness of the airport and the enterprises working there, while also decreasing the number of tourists. If the ministry does not change the draft, these companies are expected to jointly fight the legislation.
The airport submitted its Noise Protection Program in February, which lists 17 items aimed at reducing the noise caused by night flights. It is also planning to launch a passive acoustic program and build a new noise barrier. Nonetheless, residents living in the area are constantly demanding further noise reductions.
