Hungarian media authority fines HírTV over riot coverage

Broadcast media watchdog the ORTT imposed a Ft 1 million fine on HírTV for the way it covered the assault on the MTV building on September 18. The fine is the biggest imposed on a TV network to date.

The ORTT objected to the way a HírTV reporter "attempted to present the incidents as revolutionary events, and spoke of a new '56." The station will reportedly challenge the ruling in court.

Fidesz and Christian Democrat delegates to the ORTT voted against punishing HírTV; the Democratic Forum delegate abstained.

The ORTT also plans to look into Magyar Rádió's broadcast of Saturday's closed-door speech by Local Governments Minister Mónika Lamperth.
