Hungarian man mistakenly imprisoned in Spain
The foreign ministry expects a formal answer from the Spanish authorities about how a Hungarian citizen was mistakenly imprisoned, apparently because he shares a name with a wanted criminal. Zoltán Nagy is demanding compensation for having to spend 40 hours in jail.
According to Színes Bulvár lap, Nagy traveled to Spain last week for a vacation with his wife and their friends. At the port of Algeciras, the authorities stopped him, because they thought he was a Romanian citizen named Zoltán Nagy, who was wanted on a charge involving prostitution.
The Hungarian Nagy provided his personal data, but was locked up and let out only 40 hours later, with the help of Hungary's Madrid and Malaga consulates. He was allowed to go home, but was told to report at the Alicante Court every month until his trial.
Nagy wants compensation for what he calls a ruined vacation. He submitted a written report on the case to the Hungarian foreign ministry yesterday, where he was told the Spanish authorities had made a mistake. Therefore, a formal explanation is expected from Spain.
