Hungarian man injures judge, female lawyer in court
A 51-year-old male defendant attacked judges and his own female lawyer during a trial at Pest county court on Tuesday, severely injuring one judge and the lawyer.
"The man attempted to strike the female presiding judge with an iron-legged chair, when another judge, the only man in the three member council, tried to divert the blow with his hands, due to which the woman sustained only shoulder and hand injuries," chief judge Zoltán Lomnici and Chamber of Hungarian Lawyers president János Bánáti announced at a press briefing.
The assailant then raised the chair for a second time, hit the female judge and also his own lawyer. The court security guard put an end to the violent scene.
Lomnici who also heads OIT, the National Judicial Council, issued a position paper later in the day, drawing attention to the importance of protecting judges and trial rooms.
Justice and Law Enforcement Minister Albert Takács condemned the incident and said measures will have to be considered to enhance court security.
