Hungarian leaders call for end to violence
President László Sólyom, Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány and Speaker Katalin Szili yesterday issued a statement calling for a stop to the violence of the last few days.
Sólyom received Gyurcsány and Szili at the Sándor Palota, after which they released the declaration. It said "rally organisers should wait and see whether they and the police are capable of guaranteeing that protesters do not break the law. We all should be able to exercise a constitutional right to peaceful assembly and free expression."
