Hungarian gov't okays registered same-sex relationships
Civil partnership for both same-sex and opposite sex partnerships will be enshrined in law within a year, the cabinet decided at its Wednesday meeting. Couples will be able to formalise their live-in relationships at a registrar's office.
Heterosexual and same-sex couples will enjoy practically the same rights as married couples, with the difference that only married couples will be able to adopt children. Partners will be entitled to inherit property and collect widows’ pensions, and will have the same tax and family law rights and obligations, including eligibility for alimony payments.
The Free Democrats have wanted to grant equal rights to same-sex couples including the right to marry for a long time, Népszabadság reports, but the Socialists would not agree to same-sex marriages.
The Constitutional Court has recently declared that the Constitution defines marriage as between a man and a woman. Any effort to amend this aspect of the Constitution would be rejected by the opposition parties.
