Hungarian gov't proposes tripling of fines for traffic violations

From January 1st, 2008, the maximum fine that can be issued for a traffic violation in Hungary will be tripled to Ft 300,000 (€1,200) from the current Ft 100,000, if a proposal of the Prime Minister's office and the Ministry of Justice is passed by Parliament.
The proposal also aims to close a loophole through which car owners could claim not to have been driving the car at the time it was ticketed. Under the new law, owners would have to prove that the vehicle was being driven by someone else.
The new maximum fine would be imposed on those found to be speeding excessively, government spokeswoman Bernadett Budai said.
The proposal is expected to be discussed in Parliament next Wednesday, October 17.
