Hungarian government gets award for Roma integration
The Hungarian government has been granted a "Certificate for Diversity" award from the Rotterdam-based Strength in Unity Foundation, for its initiatives and accomplishments during the first two years of the international "Decade of Roma Inclusion" program. The award ceremony was held on Sunday in Rotterdam, writes gondola.hu, based on a report from state newswire MTI.
The Decade of Roma Inclusion program was launched in 2005, and involves nine Central and Southeastern European countries. It is aimed at improving the socio-economic status and social inclusion of the Roma (Gypsy) minority across the region.
According to a report assessing the results of the first two years of the program, Hungary obtained the best results in five key areas: education, employment, housing, healthcare and culture.
The Strength in Unity Foundation's goal is to promote social integration and cultural diversity in the Netherlands. The foundation hopes the Certificate for Diversity prize can bolster the Decade of Roma Inclusion program. while drawing attention to Hungary's leading role and the challenges facing Roma communities in Europe.
Sunday's ceremony also saw the awarding of an International Antidiscrimination Prize to former United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan.
