Visitors peer into bunkers in Páka built during the 1950s. They were designed to fend off possible attacks by Yugoslavia. The local government is now building a larger pathway that will take tourists into nature to see these relics of recent history.

During the this period, known as the Rákosi era in Hungarian history, the country had a terse military relationship with Yugoslavia. The bunkers and gun-stations were built at the southern borders to protect the country from possible attacks. The bunkers vary in size and were used as battle stations and gunner's sections and built near important traffic centers.

The educational pathway intends to allow tourists witness an military relic, while enjoying a walk that highlights biological and natural resources as well as recent history.

The local government will work with the Association for the Treasures of Páka (Páka Értékeiért Egyesület) and the Defense Ministry Museum and Office of Military History to fund and build the walkway.

It is a space waiting to be connected to history, as József Bécs, chairman of the Association for the Treasures of Páka says. The association has already cleaned several bunkers and cleaned the way for the path that will allow visitors from around the world take a walk back in time.

"We believe it is important that future generations learn about the conditions under which our predecessors lived, and show the curious control of power that penetrated even the most private family secrets," Bécs says.
