Human rights group condemns Hungary over marital rape

The human rights watchdog Amnesty International has warned the Hungarian government that neither the Sexual Violence Act, nor the approach of Hungarian authorities, defends women from domestic violence.

A recent Amnesty report states that two-thirds of sexual crimes reported in Hungary are committed by people known to the victims, but few of these offenders are ultimately brought to justice. Amnesty says inadequacies in the law hinder women from seeking legal remedies, along with government inertia and widespread chauvinism. Domestic rape was declared a crime in Hungary ten years ago.

The Justice Ministry said in response that several European countries have laws similar to those in force in Hungary.
