Highway stickers will no longer be used in Hungary from January 2008, and license plates will be monitored in order to check whether motorists have paid the fees, writes vezess.hu.

Cameras along motorways will check license plates, and controllers will be able to do the same with hand-held devices during traffic patrol checks, Transport and Economy Minister János Kóka announced at a press conference. He said the state will save an estimated Ft 250 million (€995,000) by not printing the stickers. This money will be spent on maintaining roads.

Kóka also said that motorway fees will not be raised in any category next year thanks to the Ft 5 billion surplus generated by road fees introduced in April for trucks weighing over 12 tons.

The minister also offered good news to motorcyclists, that the half-price four-day ticket trialled this summer will apply all year in 2008.
