The Budapest government is buying speed cameras to be installed at temporary and permanent locations in the city to help police fight speeders, reports vezess.hu. But the portal warns that recent e-mail "chain letters" about the location of these cameras contained incorrect information.

In cooperation with the police, the Budapest government is currently choosing ten locations for permanent placement of cameras, and another 40 areas where mobile units will be placed in vehicles.

Until now, only motorways have been patrolled by remotely-operated cameras in Hungary, with some urban roads monitored by policemen using mobile, manually-operated cameras.

The locations are expected to include Váci út, the Hungária körút, Kerepesi út and other long, straight roads within the city limits, in addition to locations considered particularly dangerous.

The cameras will be maintained by the Budapest Public Area Supervisory Body (Fővárosi Közterület-felügyelet), but outside contractors may also be involved.

The fixed cameras will capture license plates and transfer data on the owner of the vehicle to police, who will mail out fines to offenders.
