Hepatitis virus spreads beyond Somogy county
The hepatitis A virus has spread beyond Somogy county, and a new patient has been registered in Szentlőrinc, Baranya county, reports blikk.hu.
However, Dr. Erzsébet Papp, head of the department of contagious diseases at Kapos County Hospital, was at pains to allay fears. "We can't stress enough that hepatitis A is not nearly as serious as the more serious hepatitis B and C viruses, which could turn chronic. Around 30% of adults and 70% of children go through the disease without even knowing about it."
The hepatitis A infection is the mildest form of the hepatitis virus, and patients generally leave the hospital after a few days of treatment, fully recovered. Contamination occurs by eating contaminated food, washing hands with disinfectants regularly is the simplest way to avoid infection.
