Heavy weekend death toll on the roads
Twenty-four people died in 19 road accidents across Hungary over the weekend, despite increased road checks by police.
In eight cases the vehicles left the road and no other persons or vehicles were involved. Four people died in each of four separate accidents, and four pedestrians were killed in separate incidents.
Christian Democrat MP László Medgyasszay was involved in one fatal accident on Saturday, but police cleared him of any blame. A motorcyclist was killed when he collided with Medgyasszay's car near Csorna, western Hungary. Medgyasszay immediately waived his right to immunity and took a breathalyser test, which proved negative. Medgyasszay was not hurt in the accident.
Police said failure by drivers to pay attention, speeding and driving without headlights played a pivotal part in the weekend's accidents. None of the fatal accidents occurred on those roads where police were conducting random checks.
