Health union leader appeals to European Commission
Ágnes Cser, president of the Democratic Union of Health Care Workers, has written to European Commission president José Manuel Barroso to warn that Hungarian democracy is in danger.
In the letter published on the union's website on December 28, Cser asked Barroso to persuade the European Commission to declare that the government of Hungary has violated EU conventions in several respects.
She also requested an EU inquiry in Hungary, on the grounds that the cabinet fails to inform Hungarian citizens, allows Parliament to debate topics in a fast-track procedure without consulting affected parties, and consciously misleads society. Cser also objected that banks are getting wealthier while poverty is rising.
The Health Ministry said it has no intention of responding to the letter.
