Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány and his Italian counterpart Romano Prodi advocated a common European energy policy after talks in Rome on Tuesday. Gyurcsány was in the Italian capital for a one-day visit.

The two prime ministers told reporters after meeting at the Chigi Palace, the Italian prime minister's office, that the two countries face similar problems in energy, and have common aims in seeing a European energy system established. The two politicians agreed that a European constitution should be ratified as soon as possible before the 2009 European parliamentary elections.

They also agreed that the EU should pursue a firm and open policy towards Serbia, bearing in mind that Serbia will have a place in the EU in the future. Gyurcsány said specific assistance must be extended to Croatia in the short term and help should be offered to Serbia immediately.

Subsequently, Gyurcsány held a brief meeting with President Giorgio Napolitano, after which he met Piero Fassino, general secretary of the Democratic Party of the Left.
