Germanwings to start Berlin-Sármellék service in July
Budget airline Germanwings will start a twice-weekly service, from Sármellék airport near Lake Balaton to Berlin, as of July.
"If the Berlin service meets with success, Germanwings would add 3-4 flights linking Hungary's second-largest airport to other German cities," Balaton airport marketing director Lajos Palkó told Magyar Hírlap.
Ryanair launched its first flight from the airport, which is located at the south-western end of Lake Balaton, to London in May, followed by the Frankfurt-Sármellék service in October. Traffic at the airport has risen steadily since it opened in 2005. Passenger traffic is expected to rise to 80,000 this year, from 25,000 in 2005. Its Hungarian-Irish operators have invested Ft 2.4 billion in the airport since its inauguration.
