Gay marchers demand inquiry into Budapest Pride attacks

Gay groups yesterday demanded an investigation into attacks on them during and after Saturday’'s Gay Pride Day parade in Budapest. However, Justice and Law Enforcement under-secretary Attila Piros replied that there was nothing wrong with the way police secured the parade.

He said nine people were detained after the attacks on suspicion of hooliganism, while criminal proceedings were initiated in five cases, and police are still looking for several other suspects.

The Rainbow Mission Foundation and other organisations declared in a statement that “far-right counter-demonstrators attacked those peacefully taking part in the gay demonstration, intimidated them and physically assaulted them”. They therefore demand that the ministry start an inquiry.

Piros said there is no need for an inquiry, as those maintaining order had not made any apparent mistakes. The Free Democrats youth wing filed a complaint with police on Tuesday regarding the incitement of hatred against a community.
