Former Guantanamo inmate on way to Hungary
A detainee from Guantanamo Bay is on his way to Hungary, the Washington Post reported on Tuesday.
The former inmate, a Palestinian, whose name could not be confirmed, is one of the four detainees whom the Obama administration transferred to three countries in Europe on Monday, the paper said.
Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai announced in mid-September that Hungary would take in one former prisoner, likely to be a Palestinian national.
The Hungarian government gave its official consent to the Hungary-US agreement on accepting a detainee from Guantanamo Bay last week. Similarly to most European countries that have agreed to take in detainees from Guantanamo, Hungary has decided not to disclose the identity of the former prisoner, the person's time of arrival or place of residence.
The government will provide support to the former detainee for settling in the country, who will be given access to health-care services, language learning opportunities and will also be assisted in finding a job. The government has also agreed not to extradite the person to a third country.
