Forgeries found at Hungarian auction
Police seized five paintings before the 11th auction organised by the Belvedere Salon, owned by one time journalist Tamás Forró, at the weekend.
Two paintings were returned before the start of the auction but police would not allow three others by painter József Rippl-Rónai to go under the hammer. Forró said the auctioneer can provide evidence of the authenticity of the paintings.
MROSZ, the National Federation of Hungarian Art Object and Antiquities Dealers, alerted the police to what it called "paintings of dubious origin" two days before the auction. The art organisation had claimed that forgeries were going to be sold, and later dissociated itself from the auctions organised by Belvedere Salon.
