The 9th Hungarian Language and Culture Summer University opened on Monday in Pécs, bringing 70 students and scholars from 19 countries to the southern city to study Hungarian language and culture, reports daily Magyar Nemzet.

According to Zoltán Győrfi, spokesperson of Pécs University, which organizes the summer course, this year's participants include students from the United States, Japan, China, New Zealand and Croatia.

The program involves three lectures a day, with cultural seminars and study trips, and then exams.

Students who complete the university - which has courses ranging from beginner to advanced level - will receive certificates.
