SZDSZ spokesman Gábor Fodor believes demonstrators should find a new symbol for their cause and stop waving Hungarian flags, writes vg.hu.

"The historical meaning of the Árpád striped flag is straightforward, and the flag of the Arrow Cross needs no explaining either. However, it would be the responsibility of politicians to call the demonstrators' attention to this," said Fodor in a TV interview Thursday morning, referring to the Hungarian flag.

The Árpád striped flag originates from Árpád, the first ruler of Hungary between 850 and 907. However, it was also used by the Nazis during World War II, and is a symbol still used by right wing nationalists.

Fodor also disagrees with having Hungarian flags at demonstrations. According to him its use suggests a division within the nation. It implies that those demonstrating regard those they are demonstrating against as not belonging to the same nation.

Fodor suggests using a new, and different symbol by protestors.
