Budapest to host flood-stricken children on August 20 holiday
The fireworks show will not fall below those of previous years in terms of spectacle, but the rockets will be fired from a barge rather than from bridges and the Citadel at this year’s August 20 festivities, government spokeswoman Anna Nagy told reporters Tuesday.
Szombathely company Kopula-96 will organise the fireworks display free of charge.
Several singers will perform the “Song of Unity”, which has been composed by Voivodina-born Grammy award-winning winner ethnic Hungarian composer Sylvester Lévay. A charity phone line will allow people to make donations to those afflicted by the floods.
Some 500 children from flood-afflicted areas will be entertained in a day of programmes entitled The Nation Together. A giant “Cake of Hungary” will be cut into 1,000 slices, which will be given to the children.
The day's programmes will kick off with the hoisting of the national flag on Kossuth tér at 9 a.m. Heroes’ Square will see the inauguration of officers and a military display.
The Holy Right Hand procession will begin outside the Basilica in the afternoon.
Candles will be lit on the Danube embankment between Szabadság híd and Margit híd at 8.55 p.m, and concerts will round off the day's festivities.
