Five die as car plows into train in North Hungary
Five people died - three of them teenagers - when the car they were travelling in was hit by a passenger train near Gyongyos (N) on Thursday, national railway company MAV told MTI.
The car was completely destroyed by the accident and the fire emergency crews were called to cut the dead bodies out the wreck. One of the five was still alive when emergency services arrived but died in the helicopter transporting him to the hospital, emergency services reported.
Three of the victims were teenage boys, aged 14, 15, and 16.
The accident happened when the driver, approaching the tracks on a dirt road, attempted to cross at a point where there was no built-up road crossing. The train engine ploughed into the car and carried it for several hundred metres.
All five victims were ethnic Roma. The County Gypsy authority travelled to the scene of the accident to assist police in comforting relatives, who have been insisting on going to the scene of the accident despite police having closed off the area as part of their investigation.
