Firefighters were called to assist a Kisújszállás beekeeper after a swarm of 30,000 honeybees took refuge in an acacia tree, reports origo.hu.

The fire department in Kisújszállás, a town in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok county in the Northern Great Plain region of central Hungary, helped the beekeeper catch the swarm.

Firefighters isolated the area, donned protective equipment and clothing, and attempted to drive the queen bee into a hive, reported Lieutenant László Gulyás, the commander of Kisújszállás Fire Department.

The task took most of the day because of the size of the swarm, which was three times bigger than average. As soon as the queen bee was led into a hive, the other bees followed. The entire swarm was contained in the hive by sunset.

It was not clear where the bees came from, but the value of the swarm is speculated to be about Ft 15,000 (€ 60).

The lieutenant said the department was prepared for this type of work, and firefighters have on hand the protective clothing used in beekeeping.
