A fire spread across 70 hectares of forest and parkland in Budapest's district XV over the weekend, endangering a petrol station and a lumber yard. It was finally brought under control after eight hours by 200 firefighters on Sunday afternoon. Antal Erdős, deputy captain of the Budapest Fire Service is investigating evidence suggesting that the fire was caused by arson or negligence. Clear-up work is currently under way, although strong winds later in the day may rekindle the flames.

No one was injured, but the Budapest Police (BRFK) spokesman reported that a large number of homeless people were rescued from the burning forest. Some streets were closed and the fire disrupted three bus routes. Because of the high temperatures, some houses, free-standing buildings and curtains near the forest also burst into flames. Residents watered their own houses and gardens after being told fire service reserves were insufficient.
