Farmers cancel Budapest tractor demonstration
The demonstration planned by the Union of Hungarian Agricultural Organizations (Magosz) has been cancelled, following efforts by Budapest Mayor Gábor Demszky to prevent farmers from entering the city with tractors, writes hirado.hu. István Jakab, the president of the union said they are planning on fighting for reforms through legal channels. He added that the union will seek the opinion of the Constitutional Court because of the prohibition of their demonstration.
"Respect to those who made a decision based on common sense, and changed their original plans. I greet and thank the decision of the farmers," said Demszky in a TV interview Thursday morning, in reaction to the decision made by the leaders of (Magosz) to cancel their demonstration, which was due to begin today.
The union was planning on calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány in a week-long demonstration around the Parliament.
In order to prevent the entry of up to a thousand agricultural vehicles into the capital, Demszky had over a hundred "No entry for tractors" traffic signs placed around Budapest last week.
