Far-right protesters attack "anti-violence" demonstrators in downtown Budapest
Far right groups assaulted a group of six or seven people leaving the anti-violence Hungarian Democratic Charter's demonstration near central Budapest's Szabadsag Square on Saturday, MTI's on-site correspondent reported.
Members of the group managed to run away from the scene, but several of them were attacked and kicked by the violent youngsters.
The police in the meantime used tear gas to force out participants of an extreme right protest from the square, when they started throwing stones and petrol bombs at staff members who had cordoned off the Soviet monument. They also set fire to a police patrol car, but no injuries have been reported.
A water cannon was used to disperse a crowd near Arany Janos metro station, C Budapest, while a large part of the far right event, organised by the Jobbik party and the Sixty-four Counties youth organisation, headed for the Octogon Square at the intersection of Andrassy Boulevard and the Grand Boulevard.
Several protesters have been arrested.
