Far-right party to establish "Hungarian Guard"

The 56 founding members of radical right-wing party Jobbik will make a pledge to form a Magyar Gárda (Hungarian Guard) in Buda Castle on August 25, wearing black uniforms and the Árpád Stripe coat of arms.

According to the Guard's deed of foundation, they will be set up at a time when "Hungarians have been left without any physical, mental and spiritual self defence," and "our nation has nowhere to retreat."

Leader of the recently-registered Magyar Gárda and Jobbik president Gábor Vona yesterday told Népszabadság that "as many as 200 people have applied to join the guardsmen and the aim is to increase this to 1,000 by the end of the year." Vona added that "in a war the guard is ready to defend the homeland. The guard is not allowed to conduct military training sessions, but there may be ways of learning how to master firearms at shooting sessions," he claimed.
