Famed trees to be cut down in Szigliget
A row of poplar trees (jegenyék or nyárfák) in the Western Hungarian town of Szigliget that have appeared in several notable literary works are being cut down, due to concerns that they are dangerous.
The local public roads maintenance authority says that the poplars are so dry that they could be uprooted at any time by strong winds.
The first of the famous trees was felled Tuesday morning, and nearly 70 will be removed. The work is expected to be finished by the end of the month, while new trees will be planted in the place of those removed.
Residents of the area have collected over 200 signatures for a petition urging that the trees be spared, but with no success.
