Famed Munkácsy paintings reunited
"Christ before Pilate" to join two related historical epics by 19th century artist Mihály Munkácsy.
A trilogy of paintings by 19th century artist Mihály Munkácsy has been reunited with the return from Canada of his Christ before Pilate. The work joins Golgotha and Ecce Homo in the Déri Museum, where it will be on display from August 19.
As Christ Before Pilate is part of Canadian heritage, there is a moratorium on its sale until 2012. It will remain in Debrecen until then, while the museum will pay a rental fee of Cdn$5,000 per annum.
It is hoped that Debrecen and Hajdú county will be allowed to purchase the painting when the moratorium ends.
Golgotha is owned by Hungarian art collector Imre Pákh, a resident of the US, who has placed the painting on permanent loan to the Debrecen gallery.
Mayor Lajos Kósa said the city will do its best to see that the complete trilogy remains in Debrecen.
