Expired foods found among collections for Hungarian charity
Expired foodstuff were found among donations to Hungarian charitable organizations during the holiday period, uno.hu reports.
The Hungarian Maltese Charity (Magyar Máltai Szeretetszolgálat) received pre-packaged desserts that had past their sell-by dates, and volunteers had been expected to distribute the products to the homeless after the free Christmas lunch given out at Petőfi Csarnok on Sunday.
The discovery of expired foods among charity donations comes on the heels of a scandal in Hungary involving tons of food products that had been improperly re-labeled after remaining unsold beyond their official sell-by dates.
Meanwhile, the feeding of expired foodstuffs to homeless people raises alarms because according to health experts, many homeless people suffer from liver damage, which can make tainted foods especially dangerous to them.
