Exhibition on US Presidents' visits opens in Pécs
An photo exhibition of the visits of US Presidents to Budapest was opened in Pecs, Culture Capital of Europe, on Tuesday.
The 29 images selected from MTI's archives cover altogether 9 visits by 5 presidents of the United States between 1982 and 2007.
The pictures are accompanied by original MTI reports on each event.
MTI head Matyas Vince said in his opening address that Hungary's national news agency owned the largest photo archive - around 13 million negatives - in Central Europe. He noted that 20,000 images were now freely available on the internet, a number that would increase to 70,000 before the end of the year.
Press and cultural officer of the US Embassy in Budapest Edward Loo said that the exhibition was proof that Hungary was a key destination for US presidents.
The exhibition, organised jointly by MTI and the south Hungarian city's American Corner, was opened to coincide with the US federal holiday Presidents' Day, observed in honour of Presidents Washington and Lincoln, both born in February.
