EU to subsidize Hungarian-Austrian flood alert system
A joint Hungarian-Austrian flood alert system will be built with the help of European Union funding on the River Raba, a local gov't official said on Monday.
In addition, three fish ladders will be rebuilt, said Istvan Nader, head of the western Hungarian environmental and water management directorate.
The Raba project will be built with the co-operation of the water management authorities of western Hungary and Styria and Burgenland. It will be modelled on a similar system operating on the Mura River in SW Hungary.
The planned computer-controlled system will be based in Graz and its Hungarian end-points will be in Szentgotthard and Szombathely. The project will affect around 30 towns and villages. The total costs will be 274 million forints, 85 percent of which will be paid by the EU.
