EU building to be named after former Hungarian PM
A new wing of the European Parliament in Brussels will be named after 1990-93 prime minister József Antall, as proposed by Hungarian MEPs. The leadership of the conservative European People's Party unanimously supported the proposal.
A statement by the EPP declares that Antall played a key role in the peaceful reunification of Europe, as he had an uncompromising belief in democracy and the idea of Europe.
Socialist MEP Szabolcs Fazakas said the fact that an EU building has been named after a Hungarian before any were named after anyone from other new member countries is further international recognition of the 1989-90 change of regime and the part Hungary plays in bringing about a united Europe.
The other new wing will be named after former German chancellor Willy Brandt.
