Ethnic Hungarian woman's accuser commits suicide
The man whose report to Slovak police prompted the authorities to press charges against ethnic Hungarian Hedvig Malina last summer hanged himself in the cellar of his home in Sala, Slovakia on May 4.
Malina claims she was assaulted and beaten in Nitra last summer because she spoke in Hungarian. Slovak police have rejected the claim and charged her with giving false testimony.
Yuray K., 36, was the first to accuse Malina. Police had kept his identity secret. He was known by his neighbours to be a heavy drinker, was in the middle of a divorce and constantly in dire financial straits.
Slovak National Police spokesman Martin Korch said that the man's suicide is not related to Malina's case, and will not affect the ongoing investigation.
