An exhibition of artists from Hungary's southwestern city of Pecs, which is the European Capital of Culture this year, opened in the European Parliament in Brussels on Wednesday.

EP President Jerzy Buzek opened the exhibition, which bears the title Kaleidoscope - Pecs 2010 and showcases works by 12 artists, including paintings, prints, statues and video installations.

Buzek said it was important to present culture and art from Central and Eastern Europe after years of censorship behind the Iron Curtain.

Pecs Mayor Zsolt Pava said this year's cultural programmes will aim at representing the variety and excitement of the city which earned it the title of Capital of Culture this year.
